Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine. The word ayur means "life" and the word veda means "knowledge". Indeed Ayurveda teachings have a profound knowledge of life - as an example, the Vedic texts (written almost 4,000 years ago) refer to cells, thousands of years before the microscope was invented.

Ayurveda is a rich and complex healing system, much the same way Traditional Chinese Medicine is to China. According to Ayurveda, the universe and all living things are composed of vibrating energy manifesting itself into physical form (you, me, trees, flowers etc. are all forms of this energy) and as a result we're continually changing in ways that are either positive or negative. Because energy controls every cell, thought and emotion, the quality of our lives affects our health. We must live in a way that encourages energy balance.

Ayurvedic practitioners treat the person holistically and will look at your constitution (dosha) to see which of the three vital energies affects you most, they will also look at (among other things) your lifestyle, habits, diet, choice of sexual partner and they also evaluate the quality of your urine, sweat and voice.

Treatments that an Ayurvedic practitioner may offer include a range of traditional Indian remedies, breathing techniques, mantras, fasting, cleansing diets and bathing.
