Meditation

Although quite often associated with yoga and some of the world’s major religions, meditation is advocated by many natural health practitioners to assist in stress related disease. Meditation doesn’t need to be associated with a religious practice in order to provide benefits and even though there are two broad types of techniques, the experience can be as individual as we are.

Meditation can be seen as a form of mind control, not by an outside force, but by ourselves and can give us feelings of inner calm and peace. If practiced regularly, meditation can give rise to profound changes in our daily lives and how we view the world.

The two broad techniques used are:

  1. Concentration on a symbol, rhythmic sound such as a chant or breathing to turn thought processes inwardly in order to experience profound self realisation and transcendental awareness.

  2. “Detached awareness” - teaches us to “detach” ourselves from our emotions and view what is happening to us dispassionately in order to understand the human experience.
Meditation may be frustrating at first, but with a little guidance and persistent practice, you will be able to achieve the results you need.

Experts say that the benefits of meditation have been documented to assist in anxiety, high blood pressure, depression, insomnia and fatigue as well as other stress related diseases.
