What is Menopause?
During a woman’s reproductive years, her ovaries are responsible for the major production of two female sex hormones called oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones contribute to a regular menstrual cycle and healthy pregnancy. As we age, the ovaries gradually reduce their production of oestrogen and progesterone, eventually resulting in the cessation of menstrual function and the onset of menopause. Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 but is also seen in women as early as their 30’s and as late as their 60’s. Our bodies are quite clever and have a “back-up” plan for this time of change. During reduced hormone production by the ovaries, the pituitary gland (located near the base of the skull) sends signals to other glands (such as the adrenals) and fat tissue to increase their output in order to keep adequate amounts circulating throughout the body. If this process works well, few if any symptoms of menopause will be experienced. Our modern, busy lifestyle with its stresses, poor nutrition and lack of exercise, influence our health to such an extent that most women will experience some level and intensity of menopausal discomfort.
