HRT works on the basis of replacing the reduced hormone production in order to maintain pre-menopausal body function and thereby reducing the symptoms associated with menopause. In some cases, women are also prescribed anti-depressant drugs and sleeping tablets to help them cope with symptoms such as depression and insomnia. In addition, a HRT study done by the Women's Health Initiative was drastically halted a few years ago because of increased evidence of breast cancer, stroke and heart problems as a result of long term use of HRT, leaving many women scared and wandering what else they can do.
